On the first class and at least weekly, show you care by:
- Greeting students by name when they enter your Zoom meeting
- Ask students to use their video in the Zoom meeting to help maintain human connection and to observe the few non-verbal cues we can share like a smile, thumbs up or wave.
- Asking your students how they are doing. Call it a "temperature check" the "weekly check-in" or whatever is comfortable for you. Here are some suggested approaches:
  - Represent their week by typing into the chat an emoji or hashtag
  - Share how they are doing in terms of a weather forecast
  - Show to the camera "fist to 5" with a fist indicating a zero (not so good) and a 5 finger wave (really good)
- Sharing good news and asking students to share good news. Announce, or open up the class for announcements of, celebrations, events, etc.
In the first week of the course, determine the needs of your students by:
- Requiring completion of a week 1 survey in your Canvas course space (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-26272-how-do-i-create-a-survey-in-my-course) and asking:
  - Do you have the required materials?
  - Do you have reliable internet?
  - Do you have a webcam?
  - Do you have Microsoft Office (or other required software)?
  - (free response question) What support do you need? Is there anything you would like to share with me so that I may best understand any concerns you may have about this course?
- Respond to each student's survey responses by sending the student a message through the Canvas Inbox: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-26370-how-do-i-use-the-inbox-as-an-instructor
  - Refer students to resources available to them such as:
    - https://www.bucks.edu/resources/security/coronavirus/
      - Includes up-to-date information on student support services, free internet, food resources and other information about resources to help students
After week 1, and throughout the course, continue to build community by:
- Requiring students to work in small groups on a task.
  - Synchronously in Zoom Breakout Rooms: Using Zoom Breakout Rooms
  - Asynchronously on a group assignment in Canvas: https://community.canvaslms.com/thread/32112-setting-up-a-group-assignment-within-a-course
- Assigning students the responsibility to lead a class discussion.
- Modeling your own vulnerability and uncertainties.
